Battambang General Information

Battambang is now Cambodia's third city with a population of about 85,000. It is a nice provincial town with a number of colonial French buildings still present. The city is divided by the Sangker river.

There is a big central market surrounded by the towns main shops.

A large number of NGO's working in the northwest of the country have their offices here.

The network of charming old French shop houses clustered along the riverbank is the real highlight here, and there are a number of wats scattered around the town.

The small museum has a collection of Angkorian-era artefacts, and beyond the town there's a number of hilltop temples, yet more wats and a large lake called Kamping Poy.

Battambang’s main attractions are

  • Wat Ek Phnom  - A 10th century temple.
  • Phnom Sampeau - Hill top temple with torture room and killing cave
  • Wat Banan - A 10th century temple (a small version of Angkor Wat)
  • Kamping Poy - Man made lake constructed during the Khmer Rouge.
