Like many places in Cambodia Battambang has a history influenced by the Khmer Rouge.
One of the most impressive artefacts left behind is the Kamping Poy. A hand made dam that stretches 8km it now provides irrigation water for much of the countryside as well as a place to swim. Approximately 10,000 people died during the construction.

There are also the Killing Caves, one for adults and one for children, why they would have two caves anyone can guess. The story goes that the victims were thrown into the cave, which is about 40-50m deep and then a handgrenade drop down. To the right of the stairs is a cage full of skulls and bones.
